✍️Callig. Money Myth #2: From $15 to $15K

Welcome back to "✍️Calligraphy Money Myths" - the Email Series for people with Pro Calligrapher dreams... but also serious doubts standing in the way.

--(ICYMI: Read Part #1 here to see how bad my first paid job looked 😳)

So one of those doubts might be:

Myth #2: "Calligraphers only make a few bucks per envelope, right?"

I mean, what's the use of putting your time and effort into a craft when you'll just end up making $15 custom quotes for randos on Etsy?

And that's not an insult! That's exactly what -I- offered when I started in my biz in 2016:

But here's the catch... that's where I STARTED👆

Here's where I am NOW 👇

How did I get here?

At the start of my business, I priced with a "starving artist" mentality... because that's how I saw myself.

😨 But then, I got my first inquiry to do live calligraphy on gift tags at a small jewelry store. My husband encouraged me to dream bigger, so I nervously asked for $65 an hour. And they said yes!

Over the years, as I gained experience and confidence as a calligrapher, I raised my hourly rate to $100, then $150, then $200...

And now I charge $250/hr... that's how I got paid over $10K by just one client, for a mix of live events, digital design, and paper calligraphy to celebrate a luxury brand's 100-yr anniversary.

💭 I want you to know these kinds of jobs exist, so you stop talking yourself out of your dreams because...

THE REALITY: Many calligraphers can make $100 - $300 an hour because we do way more than just envelopes. In fact, you can make damn good money, by starting small and raising your rates a little bit at a time. It's not easy, but you can gain the confidence to do it by surrounding yourself with mentors and fellow supportive calligraphers.

In fact, the calligraphy industry and pricing has changed a LOT in the past ten years. I recorded a podcast episode all about it that you can 🎧 listen to here:

Myth #3: It takes YEARS of practice to get good at calligraphy... don't even bother showing your work before then. If you believe this, you're NOT ALONE. I wish I was making this up, but there are some calligraphers...

Welcome to "✍️Pro Calligrapher Myths" - a 5-day Email Series for folks who are curious about calligraphy... but still feeling like "There's no way I can actually get good enough to make money, right?" Well, buckle in 'cause I'm gonna drop-kick that doubt right in the crotch🥋 (I actually did earn a black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I was 16 so... watch out 😂) Let's start with a huge, scary thought that holds SO many people back: The Myth: "You have to have talent to be a paid calligrapher" Now...

I sat down to create this weekly email, and something in my body just didn't feel right... I was all jittery, like there was too much on my plate and a few too many sips of coffee in my blood and my brain was jumping to something new every 26 seconds. So instead of forcing myself to write a chirpy message to you, I pulled out my Blackwell Oblique and a fresh sheet of Bristol paper and made this: Watch a calming video version here ... and now I'm almost in tears (??) because even after ten...
