✍️ Callig. Money Myth #1: McDonalds v. Michelin

Welcome to "✍️Pro Calligrapher Myths" - a 5-day Email Series for folks who are curious about calligraphy... but still feeling like

"There's no way I can actually get good enough to make money, right?"

Well, buckle in 'cause I'm gonna drop-kick that doubt right in the crotch🥋

(I actually did earn a black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I was 16 so... watch out 😂)

Let's start with a huge, scary thought that holds SO many people back:

The Myth: "You have to have talent to be a paid calligrapher"

Now here was MY first paid calligraphy job (keep scrolling):

JUST KIDDING...👆I made that envelope 3 years into my business.

Here's my ACTUAL first paid client job:

I mean, it's not terrible... but no one would see this and give me the "Most Talented Calligrapher" award 🏆.

And that's because I had only been doing calligraphy for a few months before I started my business in January 2016.

Where did I get the lady balls?🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn't know any better, so I just started posting on Instagram and telling people I did calligraphy.

✨One month later - I got hired by a small local stationery shop just starting to offer custom invitations. The owner couldn't pay me very much... but it was an exchange that benefitted us both. We were helping each other grow.

THE REALITY: There are customers out there for every level of calligraphy - from beginner to master penman. Just like there's room for both McDonalds and Michelin restaurants and everything in between. Which means, your calligraphy doesn't have to be perfect for people to want to pay you.

If you really want to become a Calligrapher Who Gets Paid, you first have to believe that it's possible for you.

Welcome back to my email series "✍️Calligraphy Money Myths" - 'cause it would be supercool to make extra income with calligraphy but... you're not sure YOU can actually do it? ....psst, catch up on Parts #1 & 2 right here And part of it might be because of this untruth right here. Myth #3: It takes YEARS of practice to get good at calligraphy... don't even bother showing your work before then. If you believe this, you're NOT ALONE. I wish I was making this up, but there are some calligraphers...

Welcome back to "✍️Calligraphy Money Myths" - the Email Series for people with Pro Calligrapher dreams... but also serious doubts standing in the way. --(ICYMI: Read Part #1 here to see how bad my first paid job looked 😳) So one of those doubts might be: Myth #2: "Calligraphers only make a few bucks per envelope, right?" I mean, what's the use of putting your time and effort into a craft when you'll just end up making $15 custom quotes for randos on Etsy? And that's not an insult! That's...

I sat down to create this weekly email, and something in my body just didn't feel right... I was all jittery, like there was too much on my plate and a few too many sips of coffee in my blood and my brain was jumping to something new every 26 seconds. So instead of forcing myself to write a chirpy message to you, I pulled out my Blackwell Oblique and a fresh sheet of Bristol paper and made this: Watch a calming video version here ... and now I'm almost in tears (??) because even after ten...
